Enceladus erupts giant geysers of water ice into space

A global subsurface ocean vents through cracks near the south pole of Saturn moon

Saturn's small icy moon Enceladus erupts plumes of water vapour, ice crystals and organic molecules through tiger-stripe fractures near its south pole. Tidal flexing from Saturn generates heat beneath the ice shell, keeping a global salty ocean liquid and feeding Saturn's E ring.
