The Gambia is built entirely along the winding Gambia River

Surrounded on three sides by Senegal, The Gambia is the smallest country in mainland Africa.

The Gambia spans less than fifty kilometres in width at its widest point, extending 320 kilometres inland along both banks of the Gambia River. Its unique narrow boundaries were negotiated between British and French colonial authorities in the nineteenth century. The river remains its central transport and agricultural artery.
