Giant Causeway consists of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns
Located in Northern Ireland, Giant Causeway was formed by rapid cooling of ancient volcanic lava.
Roughly 50 to 60 million years ago, intense volcanic activity forced molten basalt through chalk beds to form a thick lava plateau. As the lava cooled and contracted, horizontal contraction fractures formed geometric hexagonal stepping stone columns. Local folklore attributed the formation to the legendary giant Finn MacCool.
