The Hubble Deep Field uncovered thousands of distant galaxies

Focusing on a tiny patch of dark sky revealed deep cosmic history

In December 1995, astronomers pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at an apparently empty patch of sky for ten consecutive days. The resulting image revealed over 3,000 distant galaxies in various stages of evolution, demonstrating that the universe is uniformly crowded with galaxies across billions of light-years.
