Lake Hillier in Western Australia stays vibrant pink year round

Measuring 600 metres in length, Lake Hillier on Middle Island maintains a bright bubblegum pink colour.

Unlike other pink lakes whose colours shift with seasonal temperatures, Lake Hillier retains its vivid pink shade even when water is collected into a glass container. Scientists determined the colour is caused by microalgae Dunaliella salina and halo-tolerant bacteria in its high-salinity water. The lake is surrounded by lush green eucalyptus forest.
