The Challenger Deep is the deepest known spot in the ocean
Located in the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific, the Challenger Deep plunges nearly eleven kilometres down.
If Mount Everest were placed into the Challenger Deep, its peak would still be covered by more than two kilometres of ocean water. The water pressure at the bottom exceeds 1,000 times standard atmospheric pressure at sea level. Despite these extreme conditions, specialized organisms thrive around deep hydrothermal vents.
