The MP3 compression algorithm reduced audio file sizes by ninety percent
Fraunhofer Institute scientists developed psychoacoustic compression to make music downloadable
Developed by Karlheinz Brandenburg and researchers at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute during the late 1980s, the MP3 format removed sound frequencies masked by human hearing limitations. This psychoacoustic model compressed digital audio files to one-tenth of their original size while retaining high auditory quality. MP3 files enabled digital music downloading and portable digital media players.
