Perseverance rover generated breathable oxygen from Martian air
The MOXIE instrument extracted pure oxygen from atmospheric carbon dioxide
NASA's Perseverance rover carried an experimental instrument called MOXIE that successfully demonstrated oxygen production on Mars. By heating Martian atmospheric carbon dioxide to 800 degrees Celsius, MOXIE stripped oxygen atoms to produce roughly 122 grams of oxygen, enough for a small dog for ten hours.
