The Rosetta Stone unlocked ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs
A decree carved in three scripts enabled scholars to decipher Egyptian writing
Inscribed in 196 BCE and rediscovered by French soldiers in 1799, the Rosetta Stone features the same royal decree written in hieroglyphic, Demotic, and ancient Greek scripts. Because scholars could read ancient Greek, French linguist Jean-Francois Champollion used the parallel text to crack the code of Egyptian hieroglyphs in 1822.
