Torque wrenches are only accurate in the middle of their range, and never use one to loosen a bolt. Read the setting on the tool, not on the chart.

How it works

Torque is a turning force: the same pull on a longer wrench turns a bolt harder, which is why breaker bars work. This page converts between the three torque units mechanics argue about, and turns a torque into the force at the end of a given lever arm.

The formula

Torque = force × lever arm. 1 lb-ft = 1.35582 Nm. 1 kgf-m = 9.80665 Nm. Force = torque ÷ radius.

Torque and Force Converter: common questions

What does the Torque and Force Converter work out?
Newton-metres, pound-feet and kilogram-force, plus the force a wrench actually applies. It is one of the Unit Converters tools on Mondo Knows.
How is the Torque and Force Converter calculated?
Torque is a turning force: the same pull on a longer wrench turns a bolt harder, which is why breaker bars work. This page converts between the three torque units mechanics argue about, and turns a torque into the force at the end of a given lever arm. The maths is short enough to check by hand: Torque = force × lever arm. 1 lb-ft = 1.35582 Nm. 1 kgf-m = 9.80665 Nm. Force = torque ÷ radius.
