How it works
Long passphrases beat short complicated passwords because they are easier to remember and harder to guess. Six words from a 200-word list is roughly 45 bits of entropy; seven or eight words is better still. This uses your browser's randomness, which is fine for ordinary use but is not an audited password manager.
The formula
Entropy = words x log2(size of the word list). Six words from 200 words is about 45.9 bits.Diceware Passphrase Generator: common questions
- What does the Diceware Passphrase Generator work out?
- Memorable passphrases built from random words. It is one of the Randomizers & Pickers tools on Mondo Knows.
- How is the Diceware Passphrase Generator calculated?
- Long passphrases beat short complicated passwords because they are easier to remember and harder to guess. Six words from a 200-word list is roughly 45 bits of entropy; seven or eight words is better still. The maths is short enough to check by hand: Entropy = words x log2(size of the word list). Six words from 200 words is about 45.9 bits.
- Do I need to sign up, and is my data stored?
