Cellophane is manufactured from dissolved plant wood cellulose

Transparent wrapping cellophane originates from plant material rather than petroleum

Despite resembling clear petroleum plastic, cellophane is manufactured from natural plant cellulose extracted from wood pulp or cotton. Swiss chemist Jacques Brandenberger invented cellophane in 1908 after seeking a waterproof coating for tablecloths. Its high moisture barrier made it ideal for food packaging.
