Lake Natron in Tanzania has extremely alkaline water
Volcanic sodium carbonate deposits give Lake Natron a pH level as high as 10.5.
Situated near the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai, Lake Natron collects mineral-rich water that evaporates rapidly under desert heat. Water temperatures can reach sixty degrees Celsius, making it inhospitable for most animals. However, specialized lesser flamingos rely on the lake as their primary breeding site in East Africa.
