How it works
Temperature is the one conversion that is not a simple multiplication, because the scales do not share a zero: 0 °C is 32 °F and 273.15 K. This page works through the offsets properly and shows all four scales at once, including Rankine, which engineers still use.
The formula
C = (F - 32) x 5/9; F = C x 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15; R = (C + 273.15) x 9/5.Temperature Converter: common questions
- What does the Temperature Converter work out?
- Convert Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine. It is one of the Unit Converters tools on Mondo Knows.
- How is the Temperature Converter calculated?
- Temperature is the one conversion that is not a simple multiplication, because the scales do not share a zero: 0 °C is 32 °F and 273.15 K. This page works through the offsets properly and shows all four scales at once, including Rankine, which engineers still use. The maths is short enough to check by hand: C = (F - 32) x 5/9; F = C x 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15; R = (C + 273.15) x 9/5.
- Do I need to sign up, and is my data stored?
- No sign-up, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. The calculation runs in your own browser, so the figures stay on your device and the page works offline once loaded.
