Equation Solver

Linear, quadratic and two-variable systems, solved step by step. Use the free equation solver below to get an instant answer, with the formula shown so you can check the maths and trust the result. Free, private, and no sign-up.

Mondo says

Two real roots
x = 3 or x = 2
Discriminant b² − 4ac1
Vertex(2.5, -0.25)
Root 13
Root 22
A positive discriminant means the parabola crosses the x-axis twice.

How it works

Pick the shape of your equation, type the numbers and Mondo solves it and shows the working. Quadratic answers stay exact when they are whole numbers, and turn into complex numbers when the curve never crosses zero.

The formula

Linear: ax + b = 0 gives x = −b / a. Quadratic: x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a. 2x2 system: x = (c₁b₂ − c₂b₁) / (a₁b₂ − a₂b₁), y = (a₁c₂ − a₂c₁) / (a₁b₂ − a₂b₁).

Equation Solver: common questions

What does the Equation Solver work out?
Linear, quadratic and two-variable systems, solved step by step. It is one of the Math tools on Mondo Knows.
How is the Equation Solver calculated?
Pick the shape of your equation, type the numbers and Mondo solves it and shows the working. Quadratic answers stay exact when they are whole numbers, and turn into complex numbers when the curve never crosses zero. The maths is short enough to check by hand: Linear: ax + b = 0 gives x = −b / a. Quadratic: x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a. 2x2 system: x = (c₁b₂ − c₂b₁) / (a₁b₂ − a₂b₁), y = (a₁c₂ − a₂c₁) / (a₁b₂ − a₂b₁).
