The Bering Strait separates Asia and North America by eighty-two km

Connecting the Bering Sea and the Chukchi Sea, the narrow strait lies between Russia and Alaska.

During ice age sea level drops, the Bering Strait dried up to form the Bering Land Bridge, allowing early human migrations into the Americas. Today, the Diomede Islands lie near the centre of the strait, with Big Diomede belonging to Russia and Little Diomede belonging to the United States. The International Date Line passes between them.
